The 2010 Programme of Special Events to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Markenfield Hall is currently being finalised and will be published shortly

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS TO CELEBRATE THE 700TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF THE GRANTING OF A LICENSE BY KING EDWARD II TO CANON JOHN DE MARKENFIELD TO CRENELLATE MARKENFIELD HALL.

Saturday 27 February
A Full Peal of Yorkshire Surprise Maximus will be attempted by the Ripon Cathedral Ringers, to open the celebrations. It will commence at 9:45am and, if successful, will finish between 12:45 and 1:15pm.

11am Tridentine Mass of Thanksgiving for the Chapel - Father Ronald Creighton-Jobe and sung by the monks from Ampleforth Abbey. To be celebrated in the Chapel with sound amplification into the Great Hall.

Noon Drinks for the Congregation in the Undercroft.

1:15pm Private family lunch in the Great Hall, with a toast proposed to Canon John de Markenfield.

Private Mass in the Chapel.

Monday 1 March 6pm (TBC)
Sung Evensong of Thanksgiving. Canon Michael Glanville-Smith and the Choir of St Columba’s, Topcliffe.

Markenfield Walk around the ancient Parish.

Thursday 15 April 7pm
The Friends of Markenfield AGM, followed by the annual Illustrated Lecture: Markenfield before 1310, written by the late Professor Andor Gomme and delivered by his widow, Mrs Susan Gomme. An analysis of the evidence indicating the shape and form of the earlier house on this site, much of which was incorporated in to the present building when it was greatly enlarged and crenellated in 1310. In the Great Hall.

Saturday 24 April 2pm
Ringing Chamber of Ripon Cathedral. Tour and demonstration of ringing by the Ripon Cathedral Ringers combined with a guided tour of the Markenfield and Norton (Grantley) monuments, tombs and window. Ringing tour can take groups of 20 to 25 and will take 45 minutes.

4 to 6 June
Midsummer at Markenfield

Friday 4 June 8pm
The Ebor Singers, conducted by their Director Dr Paul Gameson, in an evening of praise, celebration and thanksgiving. To be followed by sung Compline, led by Canon Glyn Webster.

Saturday 5 June
Were the Templars Guilty? A lecture by Professor Jonathan Riley-Smith, Emeritus Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Librarian and Archivist of the Order, Knight Grand Cross of Grace and Devotion of the Order.

Sunday 13 June 11:30am
Mass. Celebrated by The Rt Rev’d Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds, with Choristers from Leeds Cathedral.

Sunday 11 July
Holy Communion (BCP) celebrated by the Rt Rev’d and Rt Hon Richard Chartres, Bishop of London.

Saturday 21 August
Requiem Mass (Tridentine) for Sir Thomas Markenfield and three other members of the Markenfield family - the last of the family to live here and use the Chapel before being driven in to exile and starvation following the abortive Rising of the North in November 1569. Father Ronald Creighton-Jobe and sung by monks from Ampleforth Abbey.

6-8 September
Ripon International Festival in Great Hall.

21 to 23 October
Autumn at Markenfield

Thursday 21 October 7:30pm
Markenfield between and after the World Wars. Ian Curteis in conversazione with Allan Foster, who was born at Markenfield in 1931 when his father was tenant farmer, was tenant farmer himself from 1957-1997 and is father of the present tenant farmer Andrew Foster.
